ÔªøThe World Sand Sculpting Academy (WSSA), originally founded in 1990 under the name World Sand Sculpting Association, aims to promote sand sculpting as an internationally recognised profession and art form. Gerry Kirk, the founder and president of the WSSA has 35 years of excellent global experience in developing and organising sand sculpture events and competitions. He initiated and helped to develop the art of sand sculpture in Europe and many other countries in the Far East, e.g. Japan, China, Singapore and Taiwan. The WSSA has established formats, standards, rules and regulations for international competitions. It also provides support as a consultancy and as an international board of approval to local event organisers and producers in Europe, Japan, USA and China.
Over the last 14 years the number of competitions and events has grown and simultaneously the WSSA has become a renowned organisation which is recognised by both sculptors and local event organisers and producers. In order to face challenges such as expanding the number of competitions, the number of high quality sand sculpting events and the number of well trained sand sculptors, WSSA has restructured its organisation and developed strategic longterm planning, based on its marketing and organisational expertise.
The WSSA Headquarters, based near The Hague, Holland and presided by Gerry Kirk and Marcel Elsjan of Wipper, has a team of experienced multilingual staff to accommodate the needs and wishes of each organizer or producer, anywhere in the world.
